It’s just into end which begins to break down, but the slap-upwards finale rescues it on ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it has zero great complications when you look at the way of living off their very unappealing title.” [ 8 ]

This new film’s journalist and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess games, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did in the gambling establishment and you will old a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). Photograph provides actions and you will anticipation, and you may certain small meets from jokes to add taste. Ace shows by Cock Powell, because the a playing domestic overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, since a police inspector, as well as up the rating . Whilst spot follows a common trend, new characterizations is new additionally the performances adequate in order to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you will relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touching. Uncommon camera basics arrive on occasion to heighten focus and you can momentarily stop the attention. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling while the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, new writer and you will user producer, also aids in rendering it a flaccid manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a question of seeing Mr. Powell read his paces smartly whenever you are a huge cast of stars and you can stars give your vintage help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable nothing lady whom brings about new finest in your and Ellen Drew is the smooth and you can slinky vixen which gets your with the jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy since villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does another ready concert tour since the an exhausted cops inspector exactly who in the end closes the scenario. Many sipping and you may smoking is completed by every alarmed.” [ several ]
